Cherrapunjee, locally and officially known as Sohra, is 56 kms from Shillong, and a “must see” destination for all tourists. Apart from being the record holder for the heaviest rainfall, it was the headquarters of the Khasi/Jaintia province during British rule which was however shifted to Shillong in 1864, due to the inconvenience caused by excessive rain during the monsoon months. The average rainfall is 12,000 mm a year and the record for a single day was 2455 mm recorded in 1974 confirming it as the “Wettest place on Earth”.

After breakfast, drive to visit the Nartiang Monoliths, one of the most significant and well-preserved collections of monoliths in India. These are believed to have been erected by the Jaintia kings and local chieftains to commemorate their ancestors and mark important historical events. Some of these stones were erected over half a millennium ago, with additions made until the mid-19th century. The standing monoliths (menhirs) are dedicated to male ancestors, while the flat ones (dolmens) are dedicated to female ancestors. You may also visit the Durga Temple, located close to the monoliths. According to Hindu beliefs, the Nartiang Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The existing temple is built on the site of an older one, and iron cannons used by the Jaintia kings in past wars are preserved here. Return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
